L'Hirondelle
Sleeps 8 - 10, in 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms - this wonderful quintessential Provencal Mas is very near the lovely town of Avignon
Over the years extensive renovations have exposed the centuries, giving a simple 18th C authenticity, character and charm to this Mas. There is a lovely feeling of times gone by – in the uneven floors, slightly tilted rough walls that have been tinted in pastel colours, and the stairs with its steps worn by the passage of time. The garden is stunning and wonderfully lay out with different species of flowers and trees intermingling and setting each other off. The pool has been completely rebuilt, it is lovely to sit and watch the swallows ( that the house is named for) swoop in the evening sky.

Its pale yellow stone façade with its numerous shutters is generously covered by flowering and leafy creepers. The front door opens onto an area from which a stone staircase leads to the first floor.
On the right, the kitchen. The room is well laid out. There is a huge stone fireplace, lovely old terracotta flooring and traditional Provençal ceiling with alternating plaster and wood finish. The country style kitchen is very well equipped with gas cooker, hob, microwave, filter coffee and espresso machines, toaster and dishwasher.A large central table welcomes you at breakfast time. There is a double marble sink and a 4 ring gas cooker and oven as well as a dishwasher and numerous storage facilities. The unusual colour combination in this room gives it an upbeat feeling. The kitchen leads into a pantry with the refrigerator, washer, dryer and plenty of storage area.On the other side of the entrance, on the left, there is a dining room leading to a very luminous lounge thanks to two French windows almost facing each other; one opens up south onto a gravel terrace and the other one north to the back of the house and offering full view on to lavenders, almond trees and ,at the far end, reeds.
Antique flooring, plaster or coffered ceilings, whitewashed walls are all misleadingly simple country materials for a finish that is far from rustic!
These reception rooms both have a stone fire place that stands out beautifully; the dining room one is only decorative which is not the case for the one in the lounge. The dining room also has south facing window onto the terrace.
There is a large dinner table and minimalist decoration for this set of rooms comfortably furnished with two deep linen sofas and armchairs with plenty of scattered cushions.
The Home Theatre is fitted into the coffered ceiling onto which you can find the fossilized nest of the famous Hirondelle (swallow), thus giving its name to the house. On the left hand side at the end of the lounge a winding wooden and metal staircase rises to the first floor to the master bedroom area and on the right hand side there is a striped linen curtained doorway that leads to discreet sleeping quarters. There you find two large and lovely bedrooms.
One of the bedrooms is all white and opens onto the southern terrace through French windows; it as a queen size (1.60m) bed. The red bedroom faces north onto a stone terrace through French windows close to the ones in the lounge. This room has twin beds (90cm) that can be joined together or kept separate.
These two bedrooms share the same bathroom with a bath and shower within, an antique wash hand basin, quality fittings and pretty tiles.
The separate W.C is also used as the guest rest room. There is wall to wall Sisal carpeting and the beamed ceilings. The decoration is made intimate through heavy fabrics.Let’s take the stone staircase from the entrance; it leads to a landing which opens up onto the various bedrooms. On the right one of the bedrooms offers twin beds (90cm) placed together (but they can be pulled apart) and its window opens almost into an Acacia tree!
A rope rug covers the floor and there is a painted wardrobe and a stone fireplace. Note the wall painted a tone of blue grey whilst the others are white…a small but important detail! A white organdie lantern gives out soft diffused lighting.
On the other side of stone paved landing there is a sunshine yellow shower room with wash hand basin and WC.On the other side of stone paved landing there is a sunshine yellow shower room with wash hand basin and WC.
Then there is the children’s room with an Elephant design border on turquoise background, rope carpeting and twin (90cm) beds.
This bedroom communicates with the Master bedroom.
The Master bedroom nestling under the beams at the top of the house is very spacious. The bed is queen size (1.60cm), there is wooden flooring and a fan fixed to the beams helps regulate the temperature, storage cupboards run the length of the wall and behind a partition has been created an extraordinary bathroom. This is a real room entirely dedicated to pampering with claw feet bath and twin wash hand basins fitted into a whitewashed unit….through a small door you reach a shower area, also called a “ wet room” with space in a corner for a toilet. Out of the door you find back the small twisting staircase that enables you to make a discreet escape towards the rest of the house. The whole space is welcoming and has a large window opening onto the garden.PoolThe new swimming pool (14 x 7) is accessed by steps and alarmed for the safety of young children. The pool house comprises a fully equipped summer kitchen (sink, cooker and fridge), and built-in barbecue and a summer dining area. There is also a shower room and WC. Near the pool is a covered terrace with a fridge, furnished for dining or relaxing outdoors. The property is particularly child friendly with its large garden, with children’s swings.
The garden is just the right setting for your holiday in the French countryside - the cypress trees line the drive, irises in spring, lavenders and oleanders in summer all try and steal the show. In a corner at the end of the façade a Yucca tree is almost hanging off a dry stone wall and is looking good on it!
