Bordeaux, Dordogne
Bordeaux – do you think of vineyards, amazing wines, well there is more…
Aquitaine – a new name to cover this region - Aquitaine is an old name, (remember the famous Eleanor?) that was once one of the largest independent and most influential ‘countries’ of its time. The name has been revived to cover this whole area – spanning a variety of fascinating mini regions;
Of Course the first thing that comes to mind are the wines…. names that roll off the tongue – Chateau Margaux, Lafitte Rothchild, Haut Brion and more… Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Médoc, and Graves. A whose who of wines… come visit and stay awhile..
But the region is much more – after you leave the coastal vineyards, then drive through the beautiful St Emilion areas – you can choose and head east towards the Dordogne and the lovely town of Sarlat, or you can head a bit more northerly to Perigueux… the land of Asterix and the Romans… here you see landscape totally different than before, roman ruins, moorish influence – the tracks of the via santo compostola…
And pre – history too…the Lascaux caves – the most amazing cave paintings, have you read “Clan of the Cave Bear”? well this is where she ends up in the last few books… well worth a visit; so much to see and do here …
Let’s not forget the amazing food… foie gras comes from here.. as do many traditional French dishes … so take the time and stay a while - we have a few select villas and farmhouses to rent in this area – we work with some charming hotels and Chambres d’hotes ( a French designation for lovely B&B style inns) – call us…
